MANTEL CHANGE UP WITH BOXES

I'm always changing  the mantel in my family room.  I just never seem to get it the way I want it.   I was going to do an arrangement with books similar to what I did in the butler's pantry, but instead of using books, I grabbed my Hermes scarf boxes, some marble black and white striped bookends and topped it off with a shed deer skull and antlers.  The sunburst mirror hopped over from another room.

So, what do you think?

HOLIDAY HOME TOUR: FAMILY ROOM WITH POPS OF HERMES

 My family room has always been a combination of orange and green.  It started with a green MCM buffet that we use as a stand for our TV.  I added a pair of chairs upholstered in that same green.  When I added orange Trina Turk Santorini print fabric to an ottoman and some Hermes boxes, the color combo began.

I spotted this orange tray at Home Goods and knew it was just what the ottoman wanted.

It was only natural to add this orange Hermes (inspired) tray.  A magnolia sprig makes the unlikely holiday color work.  You can see a bit of my MCM buffet/tv stand behind the ottoman.

The mantel continues the orange and green vibe.  You know I like to leave things as they are when I add holiday decor.  The camera art isn't very holiday but the colors are perfect in this room so it stayed.

I have quite a collection of Hermes scarf boxes, orange of course.  They move around the room.  Sometimes I stack them.  Currently they're mimicking books.   I've used them as holiday decor before.  There's a link at the end of this post if you'd like to see how.  I'm using ceramic geometric trees as bookends.  I put some orange wooden ornaments on the mantel instead of on the tree.

The seed pod on a stand is also always on the mantel.  Tucked under it is another Hermes box and more ornaments.  This long narrow box has drawer liner paper in it.

If you follow my blog you'll know that my rough cedar family room mantel is the thorn in my decorating side.  I seem to always be re-styling it. 

The family room is right off the kitchen and is our most-used room.   Over the years it's become the orange and green room with chrome accents.  When I found a wonderful preserved seed pod, I knew it was the perfect green.  Yep, I'm giving the mantel another look.  The seed pod "branch" is about 48 inches long and mounted on  two iron rods on a large piece of recycled barn wood.  I have the option of hanging it horizontally or vertically.

Next to the seed pod is my plaster ram.  He usually makes an appearance during the holidays when I drape some garland around his neck.

Looking in from the kitchen you can see my favorite ottoman. It's a place to rest your feet, a coffee table when I add a tray, and extra seating for a crowd.   It was an old Ethan Allen piece with some dated blue fabric.  I had it re-done with some orange Trina Turk fabric.

I've mentioned my business partner, Monica  @gatehousedesigns.  Of course we have similar tastes and we both purchased the seed pods for our homes.  She hides hers in her TV cabinet.

Holiday Decor With Hermes Boxes

Several years ago I purchased a stack of Hermes scarf boxes.  I've mostly been using them as risers when styling my chrome bookshelves in my family room.   For the holidays, I scooted one of the bookshelves over to one side of the fireplace and styled it for Christmas.  

I added some sparkle with a vintage Christmas tree, some stylized silver deer, and a sequined table runner on the mantel.  The  disco balls are from the living room floor.  I gathered them up and placed them in and around my Chinoiserie planter and filled the gaps with magnolia. 

The mantel was too narrow for the magnolia branches, so I placed a few magnolia sprigs in some flat-backed urns and layered them in front of the architectural posters.  The branches are from my back yard.  (I may have painted them orange.)

What's a room without some fur?

Stacked Hermes boxes, shed antlers, and wooden ornaments, purchased long ago from West Elm, fill the shelves.

I'm really down to the wire here for Christmas.  I still have to decorate our tree.  It's only been in the stand for two weeks waiting for me.
