SUCCESS WITH NASTURTIUM SEEDS

I’m always hesitant when trying to grow annuals from seeds.  This year I had a success and a failure.  I planted a Hyacinth Vine at the base of my arbor.  I imagined it covering the arch with purple flowers.  Of the 50+ seeds I planted only two sprouted.  Very disappointing.

The nasturtiums were a great success.  The leaves are huge and I’m so excited to see the first flowers.  They’re a lovely peach color.  I planted them in one of my cement planters with some ferns and Creeping Jenny.  I have them in several pots around the yard but this one bloomed first.  I think it got just the right amount of sun.

DO YOU ADD TASSELS?

Do you add tassels?  I do.

ORANGE

I don’t know why, but I like orange and dislike red.  I’m sharing some sprinkles of orange in my sunroom.

The ottoman is in a Trina Turk orange print, the throw is orange with orange tassels, and the finials are Christmas ornaments that I just couldn’t put away.

Branches that I painted orange reflected in the mirror.

I decoupaged the elephant on to some books I covered in orange wrapping paper.

I used this pillow as a seat cushion to protect the caning on my Chippendale chair.

Coral on a pillow.

Coral candleholders, coral on a book cover, and more coral on the print.

I also have some coral prints in mirrored frames.  This is one of them.  I have six different ones layered on my windows.

Do you accent with orange in your home?

CONTROLLING FERNS

I love my perennial ferns, but they were becoming invasive.  I was getting tired of thinning them out and didn’t want to get rid of them.  My solution was to plant them in containers and restrict their traveling runners.  I put them in the planters in front of the garage.  They look great peeking out through the spheres.

I also added them to the cement planters on my patio.

I even had enough to fill some planters in the side yard.

My neighbor was also happy to have some to add to her garden.

What do you do with your abundance of perennials?

BRINGING IN THE BLOOMS

Spring is here.  Yes!  Bringing in my blooms to the kitchen.  I found this great pitcher that I’m using as a vase on my kitchen island.

You know that I’m obsessed with anything Fornasetti so I just had to purchase these placemats.
Perfect in my black and white kitchen with a pop of pink.
(Link to where to purchase placemats at the end of this post.)

Here are the azaleas outside my kitchen window.

A NATURAL PROGRESSION

I've been collecting plaster busts for a while, so it was a natural progression to acquire a mannequin--or two.   They complete the bust mania.

My latest mannequin was a gift from an artist friend.  She had used it in one of her art installations and decided that it was time to pass it on.  She had painted it gold.  How perfect.  I added a Tory birch scarf to make her a little less risque, then added way too many pearls and sparkle from my jewelry stash. Of course I stole a cowboy hat from my husband to top her off.  I think the hat needed some sparkle so my necklace was perfect.   Here she is in a corner of the bedroom.

I think you've already seen the androgynous mannequin in my family room.

I decided to include my plaster busts in this post too.

They're even in my bathroom linen closet.

This next bust rests on my Dorothy Draper dresser in my foyer.  I wrapped some strands of pearls around the Santos bust.

BUST IN MY FOYER

Who buys a book just for its cover?  Of course I did.  This bust is located atop the coffee table book on the bottom shelf of the foyer table.  Image is from my Instagram feed.  (link to my Instagram page at the end of this post.)

Same bust, different location.  Also from Instagram feed.

This is the origin of the plaster bust obsession.  That plaster profile in the corner of my corner cupboard was made by my grandfather.  It started this whole craze I guess.

MY TULIP MAGNOLIA

I know I always post about my Tulip Magnolia, but it’s so lovely and puts me in the mood for Spring.  It’s hard to get a photo of it from inside, but I want you to know that it completely fills the windows with pink.

I don’t just layer inside.  I love the contrast of the green of the Nandina and the Mugo Pine against the pink of the Tulip Magnolia.  The berries are still hanging.  I enjoyed them all winter.

The last two years it was hit by a late frost and I had no blooms.  It’s thriving this year.

OUR SECOND SNOW DAY OF 2025

WOW!  The first snow hasn’t even melted and here’s another.  It’s only January.

Love the snow when I can view from inside.
