HOLIDAY HOME TOUR: FAMILY ROOM WITH POPS OF HERMES

 My family room has always been a combination of orange and green.  It started with a green MCM buffet that we use as a stand for our TV.  I added a pair of chairs upholstered in that same green.  When I added orange Trina Turk Santorini print fabric to an ottoman and some Hermes boxes, the color combo began.

I spotted this orange tray at Home Goods and knew it was just what the ottoman wanted.

It was only natural to add this orange Hermes (inspired) tray.  A magnolia sprig makes the unlikely holiday color work.  You can see a bit of my MCM buffet/tv stand behind the ottoman.

The mantel continues the orange and green vibe.  You know I like to leave things as they are when I add holiday decor.  The camera art isn't very holiday but the colors are perfect in this room so it stayed.

I have quite a collection of Hermes scarf boxes, orange of course.  They move around the room.  Sometimes I stack them.  Currently they're mimicking books.   I've used them as holiday decor before.  There's a link at the end of this post if you'd like to see how.  I'm using ceramic geometric trees as bookends.  I put some orange wooden ornaments on the mantel instead of on the tree.

The seed pod on a stand is also always on the mantel.  Tucked under it is another Hermes box and more ornaments.  This long narrow box has drawer liner paper in it.

It's All In The Details--Candle Sleeves

You know I'm always ready for a change up.  This is one of my faster and easier ones--maybe. 

If you've been following you know I painted a yellow chinoiserie faux bamboo chandelier orange.  No, it's not moving out.  I still love it.  Here it is in place in the family room.

I was very happy with the way it turned out until I saw this image on Pinterest.  

That Pinterest really gets you, doesn't it?  I've decided that it's a very fun time sink.

With all the black accents I have in that room I just had to re-paint the candle sleeves.
 Off they came. 

Here's my chandelier with its new black detail.

I have to confess that I'd also moved the Trina Turk fabric that I framed from
 above the Draper dresser to the opposite wall beside the chandelier.
 I think it picks up the orange and black in the chandelier.

Hint for painting the candle sleeves:  Use an egg carton or an inverted box lid.  I pushed some pencils into the cardboard for support, balanced the candle sleeves onto the pencils, then attacked them with
some satin black spray paint. (I took them outside of course.)

I also found some candle sleeves in patterns on Amazon.

Family Room Mantel

Surprise, I'm working on changing the family room mantel.  I can't seem to be happy with it and am constantly re-working it.  I don't think I'll ever like it until I paint that wood.
 My starting point for this attempt will be these antique book plates that I'm going to frame.  Below are a few examples of them.  I love their nature theme and also that there are two images on each plate.  The colors are so vibrant and they were already matted. Yea!!

This is my new nature-inspired mantel.  I added turtle shells, a coral fan, and some prong horn antlers.  I also framed some more Trina Turk fabric, my attempt at modern art and a pop of color.  The only thing that remains from the previous mantel are the iron window grates.  I painted them citrine to match the draperies.  They provide a backdrop and fill the large space.

So what do you think?  I'm not thrilled with this mantel either.  You know how you just know when something works?  It's not working.  Back to the drawing board.  Suggestions friends?
