HOLIDAY HOME TOUR: FAMILY ROOM WITH POPS OF HERMES

My family room has always been a combination of orange and green.  It started with a green MCM buffet that we use as a stand for our TV.  I added a pair of chairs upholstered in that same green.  When I added orange Trina Turk Santorini print fabric to an ottoman and some Hermes boxes, the color combo began.

I spotted this orange tray at Home Goods and knew it was just what the ottoman wanted.

ORANGE TRAY

It was only natural to add this orange Hermes (inspired) tray.  A magnolia sprig makes the unlikely holiday color work.  You can see a bit of my MCM buffet/tv stand behind the ottoman.

The mantel continues the orange and green vibe.  You know I like to leave things as they are when I add holiday decor.  The camera art isn't very holiday but the colors are perfect in this room so it stayed.

I have quite a collection of Hermes scarf boxes, orange of course.  They move around the room.  Sometimes I stack them.  Currently they're mimicking books.   I've used them as holiday decor before.  There's a link at the end of this post if you'd like to see how.  I'm using ceramic geometric trees as bookends.  I put some orange wooden ornaments on the mantel instead of on the tree.

The seed pod on a stand is also always on the mantel.  Tucked under it is another Hermes box and more ornaments.  This long narrow box has drawer liner paper in it.

DESIGNER-INSPIRED YEA OR NAY?

I haven't decided how I feel about "designer-inspired" fashion and decor.  I tend to shy away from inspired bags, can be talked into inspired jewelry, and recently I caved and purchased some "Chanel" and "Hermes" designer-inspired cutting boards of all things.  I found a seller on Instagram (@plateandplaid) who sells a mix of vintage and new home decor.  I love pretty much everything on her site.  She has weekly sales on Instagram and also sells from her website.  When I saw these cutting boards, I couldn't wait to purchase them.  There were several styles.  You know I'm not the kind of person who just has one of anything, so I purchased three.

Can you find the one in my kitchen.  Hint: Chanel.

"CHANEL" CUTTING BOARD

I like it tucked under my hydrangeas.

The second one I purchased was "Hermes".  I placed this one on my kitchen island.  The cutting boards have the art painted onto the underside of the glass so the image is protected.  I use this as a large coaster, a place for serving cheese, or just a pretty on the island.  I also purchased the tortoise shell coasters from the same site.  The container is the bottom half of a demijohn wine bottle.  The copper rim was added.

HERMES CUTTING BOARD

Yes, I bought a second Hermes.  I like the orange in this one better.  It fits well in my family room where I have green and orange.  For now I just plopped it on the mantel next to my large seed pod.  I'm not sure if it will stay there or go onto the bookshelf.   It matches my stack of Hermes scarf boxes perfectly.

SEED POD AND CUTTING BOARD

Did I get carried away?  Maybe.  But it felt so good to go shopping even if it was online.  Covid has really taken away one of my guilty pleasures.  How about you?

FYI, there was a Tiffany blue cutting board too.   I didn't buy it.  This wasn't related to any kind of restraint.  I didn't know where I'd put something that was that color.

How do you feel about designer-inspired?

BOUQUETS WITHOUT BLOOMS

During the Spring and Summer my garden is bursting with blooms.  I always gather them and bring them inside.  Now that it's getting colder, most of the blooms are gone. That doesn't mean I still can't have an arrangement in my home.  There is such a thing as bouquets without blooms.

I always turn to my shrubs.  I filled a vase with nothing but clippings from my Nandina bush.

Most of the summer the Nandina is green.   As it gets colder, the leaves become tinged with red.
I added  it to a planter at the store.

Magnolia leaves are my favorite, especially during the holidays.

MAGNOLIA LEAVES AS HOLIDAY DECOR

My cedar tree comes inside too.
I added some around silver holiday spheres in my dough bowl.
CEDAR BRANCHES IN MY DOUGH BOWL

When the leaves change from green to reds, yellows, and oranges, I snap off a colorful branch
and add it to a wicker-covered bottle on my  screened porch.
At the end of my street is a tree that drops the most wonderful pods while releasing its leaves.  They look like huge pea pods and turn a warm brown, curling and twisting perfectly.  Here they're wrapping themselves around a vintage book.

BRANCHES AND LEAVES IN FALL COLORS

I put some of the colorful branches on the bench on my front porch too.

FALL BRANCHES AND MY FAVORITE PAINTED PUMPKIN

I even use branches without their leaves.
When a friend cut down her birch tree, I rescued some branches and added them to a demijohn.

Actually, branches work as arrangements all year long.

Yes, I painted Harry Lauder Walking Stick branches orange and placed them into a vase.

Shed antlers make arrangements without blooms too.
