MY CLIMBING CARDINAL VINE IS HAVING A BAD HAIR DAY

 This is the first time that I planted a Climbing Cardinal Vine on my arbor.  It took a while to get started but it’s really covered the arbor.  Let’s just say that there are a few wild vines.  I’m saying that she’s having a bad hair day.  I’ve said this before but the end of summer gardens are the best.

ESPALIER INSPIRATION

I've always wanted to have an espalier in my garden.  I even had the perfect wall for it and an inspiration image.

Of course I'm way too impatient, so I planted Japanese boxwood and added geometric trellises in between each one.  If you're a long time follower you've already seen what I came up with for the wall, but hang in there because I have been saving some espalier inspiration that I'll share.

I covered the trellises with climbing cardinal vine. 

 I grew them from seeds.

I haven't given up.  Here are some I'd love to try.

My blogger friend, Ron, who writes the blog, Uptown Acorn, created an espalier on his fence with Confederate Jasmine.  Not only is it the look I love, but also the scent from the Jasmine makes it even better.  You can also find Ron on Instagram @acorncottageuptown.

MY PERENNIAL BEGONIAS

Did you know that there are perennial begonias? 

 I had no idea there were until a friend shared some begonias from her garden.  They have been a part of my cottage garden for many years.  They continue to spread and bloom.   Here's a close up of the flower.

They look very similar to the annual begonia.

They totally surrounded the base of my Mugo Pine tree.

They encircled my bird bath too.

Lantana is another plant I use in my garden.  It's only an annual, but it manages to spread into a large flowering ground cover that adds color all summer and into the fall.  This Lantana is yellow but it comes in many colors.

It can quickly spread and fill a large area.
